Nix is my favorite character from Beatmania IIDX.

Half American, half Japanese. He likes American culture more, though he and Shilow (who's also mixed) disagree on this point.

In the past, he was enlisted in the US Airforce with a goal of being a pilot. But due to getting into a fight with a superior officer, he was discharged. Since then, he's been directionless in life.

Nix has a love for video games and music. Due to his previous pilot training & sharp eyesight, he's very good IIDX & can score pretty high on higher level charts. Though he doesn't play seriously, just for fun.

Jobwise, he was noted to work part-time at a gas station, and later a part-time english teaching job arranged by Siren (though he slacked off on the latter, since he found it boring).

He's currently living in Siren's apartment, alongside Eiri... and tends to drive up the utility bills while not paying rent. In the summer he hates the hot weather & cranks up the AC, and in the winter he hogs the kotatsu. He tries to get around paying it by saying something like "If I pay rent that means I've lost". To which he's forced to skip a meal. When Siren and Eiri aren't around, he works out in secret & can get out of accidents unscathed because of his training.

He has a younger sister, Himmel. Though their relationship beyond noted siblings is unknown. Similar said about Anzu, a secondary character introduced in Sparkle Shower who shares his hat, but any ties to him beyond it has yet to be revealed.

Other lore notes I couldn't figure out how to segway into:

He met Eiri at his gas station job. Initially annoyed him due to his poor service attiude, but this somehow lead to him beating Eiri in a IIDX match, and Eiri staying in the area (at Siren's place) until he could beat Nix.
Nix fixed Eiri's bike once and the two hit it off well... until Nix broke it again. Eiri forced him to eat a zazamushi (edible insect) as punishment.
Has a crush on Erika, who brought him to a hospital after finding him beat-up in an alleyway & later became part of a ramen club with. While he acknowledges she and Shilow share mutual feelings, he won't be happy if any harm comes Erika's way.
Noted favorite music genres include Drum and Bass & Big Beat, w/one of the artists he likes being TaQ.

Importance to me

When I first got into Roots 26, Nix was already a top favorite because I thought his background & some of his renders funny, and his design's cool. Plus, I took the note of 'likes American culture' to be an excuse to draw him doing New England related stuff (my travel sketchbook quickly got filled with him getting stuck on the T with Dunkins lol).

But I think what ended up tipping him to an absolute favorite for me was his Arkadia DJ NUMBERS page. Even through the rough machine translation I was going off of, a lot the info in his monologue read as someone who's going through it. Lost direction after loosing his career & being disowned, having convinced himself it's better to be disliked. It reads to me as a form of depression, and kinda recontextualizes some of his 'lazy and careless' behavior.

The 2020's, especially around the time I truely got into IIDX has been a difficult time for me. Post-college I've also been feeling a sense of directionlessness, so I think that led to me latching onto him as something more important than a png from a DJ game. I know it's a work of fiction & probably not a good idea to put so much importance into a Konami ip, but the fixation chose me. He quickly became Prisma-tier in terms of being an important to me (for context, Prisma was a very important comfort OC 2019-2022).

Headcanons

Thoughts I have on him. Keep in mind these are my personal headcanons & should not be taken as the main canon.

Canon-supported

Nix has depression. He's noted to have lost motivation / be directionless after leaving the military with his only goal beforehand being to become a pilot. And while I'm pretty sure this was intended as a comedy bit, not being consistent with work & being more careless combined with the above reads as someone with some level of depression to me. Plus, in his Arkadia DJ NUMBERS page he's convinced himself it's better/easier to be disliked. Though due to being portayed with a reckless-enthusiasim in most of his art, I think he's high-masking about it.
His relationship with his family isn't healthy. His Arkadia DJ NUMBERS page notes he was disowned by his father after getting discharged from the military. We don't know the details of what lead to him getting discharged, but it's fucked up to ditch your own kid over it regardless.

His favorite food being ochazuke is due to convenience & not taking a lot of energy to make.
He doesn't like air travel, because he's envious of pilots.
Due to his pilot background, he's still highly knowledgeable about it & planes, and is the first to point out if something's depicted incorrectly in media (inaccuracies drive him up the wall)
He would be a car guy, well, if he could aford cars

The way I headcanon his relationship to Himmel changes depending on how I feel. But in general, it's one of these:

Nix wasn't very close to Himmel, as she's years younger than him & most of his priorities was on pursuing being a pilot at the time. He's actually jealous of her for getting more attention, but doesn't say anything
Nix was close to Himmel, and helped take care of her a lot when she was growing up. Even after they started bantering when she got older, he's glad that because Siren became her butler, that she's in his life again. She might be the last family he has left.

Part of his motivation for joining the Air Force was gaining his father's approval. Hence loosing direction after both getting discharged & disowned.
Especially with his downhill spiral afterwards, I imagine Nix would have a far lower opinion on the military after being discharged.
His english would either have a light Texan accent, or a New England accent. Depends on how I'm feeling that day (as of last updating, honestly my current EN voice headcanon is Jax from TADC).
Siren's apartment is a multi-lingual household w/Nix and Siren switching between English & Japanese in their conversations often (with a bias towards Japanese).

Nix & Siren would drop into an American accent for some words. Idk how to describe this outside of that one clip of Toby Fox saying "Touhou Project". Nix does this more often than Siren
I imagine when it was just Nix and Siren, they'd mostly use English in the house. But after Eiri moved in they mostly use Japanese to not make him feel left out

He likes cats, but cats don't like him.
If they existed in the same universe, he and Jpeg would beef with eachother.
In IIDX, he plays 2P and would be SP 十段 / 10 Dan minimum. He could push for SP kaiden if he wanted to, but doesn't feel the motivation to go for it. His playstyle is either "Dolce" or 1048

Shipping related

I'm a multi-shipper & only do it casually, so these change depending on AU / how I feel that day

Whether or not I ship Nix/Eiri depends on the AU. But for the AUs I do, I imagine it would involve some level of pinning. Either he's oblivious to Eiri crushing on him/pinning him, or it's mutual & he's just convinced himself he's not worth pursuing.
Nix/Siren only exists for the Fang and Iron AU. w/o spoiling too much as I'm not sure if I want to post it or not, it's slow burn over the course of years.
On self-shipping, I'd say queerplatonic. Idk if I'd consider this a yumeship yet since it's not something I feel strongly about all the time.

I'm semi-sharing. I don't mind interacting with other Nix self shippers, but I prefer to keep most of my self ship works private and not have other people's input on them unless we're friends.
