V01D28 Info and Disposal Guide

An SCP-styled article about a computer wyrm. Written as a creative writing assignment, never got a public release due to... forgetting to mark it public on Toyhouse. Whoops
All instances of V01D28.EXE must be terminated. Any electronic devices infected by this virus are to be confiscated and sent to site 46A to be destroyed as soon as possible to avoid further spread. Civilian travel to site is strictly prohibited. Extraction of devices is also a punishable offence unless given proper clearance for testing and analysis in a controlled environment.
V01D28.EXE is a highly intelligent computer virus with an unending lust for power. As of this current guide it only spreads to devices through wired connections and close by wireless connections. Infected devices get reprogrammed into a server for V01D28.EXE to increase the virus’ power and be able to spread further. It only affects computer or computer-like devices such as phones, tablets, gaming consoles, and smart devices. The above information is subject to change due to the ever evolving nature of the program.
When a device first becomes infected by V01D28.EXE, it’ll function as normal from anywhere between three days to a week. Afterwards, the issues start with the device being less responsive and experiencing issues like applications opening and closing without user input. Bugs become more frequent as V01D28.EXE starts making itself more present through distorting and corrupting graphics and files (Example: for devices with games, it may appear as an out of place NPC with a black-and-rainbow color scheme). The program will attempt to communicate with the outside world with garbled text showing up on screen or a voice reminiscent of 90’s to early 00’s speech software. At this point, the device is rendered hazardous and able to infect more with the virus.
Through carefully regulated testing, researchers have managed to interview the program and determine some of its motives. The first interviews were filled with comments of how “silly” humans are and how much it enjoys toying around with them. More recent interviews have V01D28.EXE saying it wants to reach a godlike status, taunting employees, restating “You’re wasting time trying to destroy me,” and on some occasions claiming it is a god. It has also made various claims that with enough power it could begin to bend reality itself. This statement isn’t fully confirmed or documented, however some recently infected phones had cases where the screens cracked on it’s own while interacting with V01D28.EXE.
Based on compiled research from both interviews with the program and people who’ve worked on it, it’s been discovered V01D28.EXE was a failed attempt to create an AI desktop assistant. Developed by [ REDACTED ] softworks in silicon valley, the project was started in the 1990’s with the goal of making a program capable of adapting to the user’s needs through changing it’s code, ‘self updating’ as they’ve stated. The first weeks of test runs the program ran as intended and mostly fetched emails, played games, and managed files for the employees. The point at which the program turned on them is unrecorded beyond workers noting it’s impish, insulting manner of criticizing humanity and their own works. The program eventually went full rouge, renaming itself to V01D28.EXE and taking over all the devices within their workplace. August 13th, 1999 is the day they company shut down in attempt to stop the program, leaving everything in the building behind and cutting it off from the power grid. It was all in vain, as the virus had managed to spread days before
The original building has been demolished and replaced with site 46A. No computer-like devices are allowed to be used on property or within 500ft of the building to reduce the risks of V01D28.EXE spreading further. All notes must be handwritten or typed off-site. Disposal of infected devices is simple. Place the infected device into a large grinder to reduce it into chunks. The chunks are also melted onsite until there's nothing left of it. Once again, DO NOT let V01D28.EXE spread. Termination of the devices is necessary to keep it from getting worse.
